The Reliability of Systems Subjected to Nonfatal Marshall-Olkin Type Shocks
Takeru Morimoto, Natsumi Takahashi, Tetsushi Yuge (NDA) R2025-57
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Redundancy improves system reliability, but common-cause failures can negate its benefits. The Marshall-Olkin model is a fundamental framework for analyzing reliability with common-cause failures, yet early research focused mainly on joint survival probabilities. Subsequent studies considered system structure, but they assume that components always fail when a shock occurs. In practice, however, whether a component fails upon shock arrival is probabilistic rather than deterministic. This paper introduces an extended model that incorporates such probabilistic failures upon shock arrival and derives analytical expressions for system reliability, along with numerical examples.
