AI and RAN integration is expected to increase the power consumption of base stations compared with
conventional architectures. However, existing architectures do not consider power optimization in environments
where RAN and AI processing coexist on the same platform. This study aims to optimize system operation from
the perspectives of throughput and power consumption in such environments. We develop an AI-RAN testbed
using the GH200, a CPU–GPU integrated chip, and measure power consumption characteristics when RAN and
AI workloads share GPU resources. The results reveal that the driver responsible for CPU–GPU synchronization
repeatedly switches between idle and active states every 2µs, causing high-frequency scheduling tasks even without
traffic and leading to unnecessary power consumption. Based on these observations, we propose a method that
dynamically controls the CPU frequency of the core responsible for GPU synchronization according to the PDU
length. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces base station power consumption by 30W in
the idle state while maintaining throughput. |
