Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It is well known that the obstruction of the first Fresnel zone significantly affects received signal strength and forms the basis for shadowing evaluation in direct wave propagation. The obstruction ratio of the first Fresnel zone is also used as an index in regulatory standards such as the Japanese Radio Act (Radio Law). In this study, the relationship between the Fresnel zone obstruction ratio and shadowing loss is investigated. Shadowing loss is analyzed using the Kirchhoff approximation as an analytical method. Practical obstruction scenarios are considered, including cases where obstructions are confined within the zone as well as cases where they extend beyond the zone boundaries. The results quantitatively confirm that shadowing loss is not uniquely determined solely by the obstruction ratio within the zone but varies depending on the obstruction conditions inside and outside the zone. Based on these findings, shadowing loss for a given obstruction ratio is treated statistically, and representative values corresponding to specific probabilities, such as the 99th percentile value, are examined. Comparison between analytical and measurement results confirms the validity of statistically characterizing shadowing loss with respect to the Fresnel zone obstruction ratio.
