In synchronous optical code division multiple access systems, the level division multiplexing (LDM) has been studied as an effective technique for increasing communication throughput. However, as the maximum number of layers increases, the bit error rate (BER) performance degrades, which imposes a practical limit on the achievable number of layers.
In the $M$-ary codeword assignment scheme for modified prime sequence code, $M$ information values are assigned to $M$ codewords selected from a group of $q$ codewords, where $M=2$ corresponds to the conventional scheme and $M=q$ corresponds to the $q$-ary assignment scheme. The $q$-ary assignment scheme improves power efficiency per information bit compared to the conventional scheme, allowing a larger maximum number of LDM layers. However, since the number of transmittable information bits per layer is smaller than that of the conventional scheme, the overall system throughput is reduced.
In this paper, we propose a new codeword assignment scheme with $M=4$ to improve the overall system throughput. The proposed scheme achieves the same number of information bits per layer as the conventional scheme while increasing the maximum number of LDM layers by one. Furthermore, under the condition of equivalent BER performance, we show through theoretical analysis and computer simulations that the proposed scheme achieves higher overall system throughput than both the conventional and $q$-ary assignment schemes. |
