ITU-T Standardization Trends for Optical Transport Networks Kengo Shintaku (NTT) PN2026-2 |

Optical Transport Network (OTN) is a Layer 1 protocol applied to optical transmission systems that provide long-haul, high-capacity transport in carriers’ transport networks. The signal structure and multiplexing hierarchy of OTN have been standardized in ITU-T Study Group 15 Question 11, and OTN has been continuously enhanced not only to support higher capacities but also to incorporate various functions required in each era. This paper first outlines the signal structure and multiplexing technologies of existing OTN, and then introduces recent standardization trends for OTN beyond 1 Tbit/s, referred to as Beyond 1T OTN, which is currently under discussion. |
