BBR (Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time) is a congestion control algorithm that aims to operate at Kleinrock's ideal operating point, which simultaneously achieves minimum delay and maximum throughput. It is well known that BBR tends to overestimate the available bandwidth (BtlBw) when multiple BBR flows share a bottleneck link. We have proposed a new BBR-based algorithm, named BMR (BBR with Moderate Rate), which mitigates bandwidth overestimation by appropriately reducing the transmission rate.
Bandwidth overestimation also occurs due to ACK jitter caused by congestion on the reverse path. In this paper, we investigate the causes of this overestimation through performance evaluation using computer simulations.
Our evaluation results show that overestimation occurs only when the sending rate of BBR and the measured delivery rate increase simultaneously. These increases are independent, because the former is mainly caused by BBR behavior on the forward path, whereas the latter is caused by congestion on the reverse path. To address this issue, we apply BMR, which reduces the transmission rate of BBR. Our results demonstrate that BMR effectively mitigates bandwidth overestimation caused by reverse-path congestion. |
