Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) There is growing interest in stratospheric High Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS) as a resilient backhaul solution to complement the vulnerability of terrestrial communication infrastructure during natural disasters. This paper reports the development of a practical HAPS backhaul system with multi-gateway capability using 38 GHz-band full digital beamforming, along with a flight demonstration using a Cessna aircraft. The proposed system equips the HAPS airborne unit with a 5G base-station function and a 56-element full digital beamforming antenna, aiming to realize site diversity across multiple gateways. In the flight demonstration, the Cessna-mounted HAPS system was connected with two ground sites approximately 6 km apart, and it was confirmed that selective use of links to the two ground stations can improve communication quality and increase connection retention.
