Development of a wildlife detection camera system using SpeciesNet based on the river monitoring camera system "KumaCam" and its initial evaluation

(in English) As climate change intensifies natural disasters, flooding caused by linear precipitation systems and localized torrential rains has become increasingly frequent across Japan. The authors developed and deployed a river monitoring camera system called ``KumaCam'' However, its effective use by residents was found to be limited to the rainy season, revealing a lack of year-round continuous utilization. To address this issue, we developed a prototype ``Wildlife Detection Camera System'' that leverages Google's wildlife identification AI, ``SpeciesNet'' enabling notifications to be sent to residents' smartphones when pest animals are detected, thereby promoting the use of KumaCam beyond the rainy season. We conducted an initial evaluation of the prototype's implementation. As a result, the prototype successfully detected and identified five animal species over an approximately 30-day deployment period, achieved a false classification rate of only about 1.26% when images were transmitted to the cloud for inference, and delivered images containing confirmed animal presence in all but one notification.
