The importance of high-capacity and reliable wireless communications has increased with the advancement of mobile services. High-frequency wireless systems, however, suffer from strong directivity and high susceptibility to blockage, often resulting in coverage holes. To address this issue, wireless architectures employing dielectric waveguides (DWGs), which exhibit low transmission loss in high-frequency bands, have been proposed. A dielectric waveguide can bypass radio obstacles and also act as a radiating structure by attaching dielectric particles at arbitrary positions along the waveguide, enabling flexible area deployment and efficient coverage of coverage holes. Owing to these features, the application of dielectric waveguides to in-vehicle area coverage in high-speed trains, where numerous radio obstacles exist, has been actively investigated. However, due to their rod-like structure, dielectric waveguides require larger cross-sectional dimensions at lower frequencies, making miniaturization challenging for installation inside train cars. In this report, we show that employing a Goubau line enables significant miniaturization while preserving the advantages of this area deployment approach. |
