Throughput Enhancement using Delayed Transmit Signals for NTN Service Links in Direct-to-Cell Communications

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, enhancing the throughput of service links between terrestrial user equipment and aerial nodes has become an important research issue for advancing direct-to-device communications in Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs). To address this issue, recent studies have primarily focused on techniques that exploit multiplexing gains, such as spatial Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission through cooperation among multiple satellites and the application of Dual-Polarized MIMO assuming a single aerial node. On the other hand, given the propagation characteristics of NTN service links, where Line-of-Sight (LoS) conditions are dominant and multipath components are scarce, there has been insufficient investigation into designs that improve the communication quality of a single transmission itself through simple implementations. Under such conditions, methods that enhance communication quality without relying on multiplexing are of particular interest. One promising approach is to intentionally introduce delayed signal components at the transmitter to increase the channel’s frequency selectivity and thereby improve coding gain. Motivated by this perspective, this paper investigates the feasibility of applying transmit delay diversity to NTN service links assuming Direct-to-Cell (D2C) communications. Performance evaluations based on an NTN channel model show that, even under a channel model assuming LoS conditions, adding delayed transmit signals and controlling their power can improve throughput by up to approximately 0.14 bps/Hz.
