We hypothesize that cross-chain bridge latency is fundamentally constrained by the physical limits of Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus, an effect that remains underexplored.
This study analyzes bidirectional USDC transfer delays between Arbitrum and Hyperliquid using parametric distribution fitting based on empirical data.
Deposit delays are well modeled by a Gumbel distribution, while withdraw delays follow a normal distribution.
From the Gumbel parameters, we inversely estimate the effective validator count of Hyperliquid as N ≈ 19, consistent with BFT finality theory.
We further observe a strong asymmetry, with withdraw delays being approximately 26× longer than deposit delays, and propose a time-risk metric to capture this imbalance.
These results provide a quantitative basis for latency-aware design and parameter optimization in secure cross-chain bridges. |
