This paper describes a preliminary study on an impression evaluation method for noise‑suppressed sounds produced by active noise control (ANC) processing, and experimental results obtained by using the presented method. Conventional sound‑quality evaluation techniques have primarily focused on sounds that listeners intend to hear, whereas relatively limited attention has been directed toward noise‑suppressed sounds, which listeners do not wish to hear but nonetheless perceive. Furthermore, in order to establish an evaluation framework that more accurately reflects user‑perceived quality, it is considered more appropriate to assess the timbre of noise‑suppressed sounds after processing, rather than the noise level that varies depending on the employed signal‑processing algorithm. To address this issue, we investigated an impression‑evaluation method for assessing the perceived comfortable or uncomfortable impression of noise‑suppressed sounds, drawing upon established subjective evaluation methodologies. Using an evaluation procedure based on the Absolute Category Rating (ACR), we demonstrate the validity of subjective quality‑assessment experiments for noise‑suppressed sounds and report the findings obtained from these experiments. |
