The relationship between reflection efficiency and operational bandwidth of a D-band (140 GHz) anomalous reflection metasurface-based reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), enhanced by efficiency optimization and broadband design, is numerically studied. First, for RIS designs with reflection angles of θ_r=30" ",45" ",60" ", and 75" " deg under normal incidence, non-local efficiency optimization utilizing surface waves is applied to improve reflection efficiency. As a result, both unwanted specular and spurious reflections are almost completely suppressed for all designs, and nearly 100% reflection efficiency toward the desired direction is numerically achieved. On the other hand, the trade-off between reflection efficiency and operational bandwidth is also investigated by allowing a certain degradation in efficiency at the design frequency. Numerical results show that a clear trade-off exists between reflection efficiency and bandwidth. The achieved relative bandwidths in which the undesired reflections are less than –10 dB for the designed RISs with θ_r=30" ",45" ",60" ", and 75" " deg are 13.6%, 9.5%, 8.1%, and 4.2%, respectively. |
