The reproduction of sound-images in mid-air, analogous to holograms, has the potential to significantly enhance the sense of presence in theaters, virtual live stages, and communication systems. The authors have been investigating methods for constructing acoustic holograms using parametric loudspeakers, exploiting their high directivity and nonlinear acoustic characteristics. To this end, various approaches have been proposed, including the formation of focused sound sources by arranging multiple parametric loudspeakers in an arc, the generation of focused sources through phase-controlled linear arrays, and hybrid methods combining parametric and dynamic loudspeakers based on the control of the direct-to-reverberant ratio derived from room impulse responses. These approaches aim to enable precise control of the perceived position and distance of sound-images.
In this talk, the fundamental principles and characteristics of parametric loudspeakers are first outlined. Then, the aforementioned methods are systematically reviewed. Finally, challenges toward practical implementation in real environments are discussed, along with future perspectives for applications of acoustic holography. |
