In recent years, transmission traffic in data center interconnect (DCI) networks has increased rapidly due to the widespread adoption of cloud computing and generative AI, leading to large-scale deployment of high-count optical fiber cables. In such communication links, rapid fault detection and recovery are strongly required in the event of failures; however, conventional optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) testing is not suitable for continuous fault monitoring of high-count optical fiber cables. In this paper, we propose a batch fault detection method for multi-core optical fiber links by simultaneously monitoring the optical power of transmission signals and backward reflected light, based on a previously reported batch optical power monitoring technique using optical taps and an infrared image sensor. By using variations in the ratio of backward reflected light to transmitted light as an indicator, optical fiber faults can be detected. Fiber break experiments using a prototype optical power monitor demonstrated a maximum error of 0.52 dB for the reflected-light variation, confirming that fault detection with a threshold of ±0.5 dB is appropriate. Furthermore, the calculated results based on an optical fiber link model showed good agreement with the experimental results. In addition, an evaluation of the applicable monitoring distance using the proposed model revealed that practical fault detection is achievable for a fiber length of 10 km assuming 400GBASE‑LR8, while for a fiber length over 20 km, the detectable fault region is limited to within approximately 4 km from the transmitter side. The proposed method is therefore a promising technology for enabling rapid fault detection through continuous batch monitoring of multi-core optical fiber links with approximately 100 cores in data center internal wiring and DCI fiber cables. |
