Interpersonal distance is an important nonverbal factor that influences social interaction. However, it remains unclear how differences in distance between two individuals affect variations in body movement and posture during natural face-to-face conversation. In this study, discussion tasks was conducted with Japanese university students while manipulating interpersonal distance across a range from 0.45 m to 2.7 m. Measurements of participants' head and pelvic coordinates showed that anteroposterior movements of the head and pelvis during conversation tended to be smaller at closer distances and larger at farther distances, indicating that changes in interpersonal distance affect movement in the anteroposterior direction. In addition, under the close-distance conditions during conversation (0.45 m and 0.9 m), a positive correlation was observed in the amount of movement within each pair, suggesting the possibility of coordinated movement associated with social interaction. |
