Fear and disgust, and autonomic nervous responses to trypophobic stimuli in Augmented Reality

(in English) Applying unpleasant visual modifications to the body via augmented reality (AR) has become popular. This study investigated the psychophysiological mechanisms of superimposing trypophobic stimuli onto the hand using AR. We projected a concave or flat circular cluster onto a real object or participants’ right hand, measuring subjective fear and disgust, and cardiovascular responses (stroke volume, total peripheral resistance, and heart rate). For cardiovascular responses, The results showed marginally significant differences in stroke volume. However, the concave cluster elicited stronger fear and disgust, and hand presentation amplified both emotions regardless of cluster type. These findings suggest that superimposing cluster stimuli onto one’s own body via AR moderately modulate cardiovascular responses, but clearly amplifies multiple emotional experiences.
