Design and Evaluation of an Autonomous Attack Agent Using POMDP -- Implementation and Experimental Evaluation in a Network Environment --

(in English) In recent years, cyberattacks have become increasingly automated and autonomous. Since autonomous attack agents execute attacks without external communication, conventional detection methods are becoming increasingly inadequate to counter them. In this study, we designed and implemented an autonomous attack agent using a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) and evaluated it in a virtual network environment. In a single-host environment, the POMDP policy was the only approach to achieve a positive cumulative reward. In a multi-host environment, it also outperformed the Greedy policy by 14% under low-detection conditions. We further confirmed that utilizing harvested credentials improved cumulative reward by 24.1%. In a firewall-segmented network environment, the reach rate to the Confidential segment was limited to 25.0%, quantitatively demonstrating the effectiveness of defense-in-depth.
