This paper investigates the use of a planar dielectric lens to improve the transmission efficiency of microwave wireless power transfer (WPT) using patch antennas. Electromagnetic simulations were conducted using ANSYS HFSS to evaluate the effect of the lens on the transmission characteristics and electromagnetic field behavior. The maximum S21 is improved from −5.6 dB at 9.0 GHz without the lens to −3.1 dB at 9.3 GHz with the lens, corresponding to an improvement of approximately 2.5 dB. In addition, the wireless power transfer efficiency is improved from less than 30% to more than 50% by introducing the lens. Furthermore, the Poynting vector distributions show that the planar lens concentrates the electromagnetic waves toward the RX direction and modifies the propagation behavior from spherical spreading toward a quasi-planar wavefront distribution. These findings demonstrate that the planar dielectric lens is effective not only for improving far-field directivity as a conventional dielectric lens antenna, but also for enhancing transmission characteristics and electromagnetic coupling in a near-field-dominant WPT system. |
