Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In response to growing demands for faster and more efficient connectivity in advanced information and communications technology, terahertz waves (0.1–10 THz) are becoming indispensable for ultra-high-speed data transmission owing to their broad bandwidth with high transparency. In chip-to-chip communications, terahertz waves provide a promising approach to achieve large data capacity with improved energy efficiency, effectively bridging the gap between electrical and optical domains. By realizing this potential, all-dielectric waveguides have emerged as high-speed interconnects, offering broad bandwidth and low-loss characteristics, while being compatible with planar integration. In this paper, we review different types of terahertz substrateless all-dielectric waveguides, including photonic-crystal, effective-medium-clad, and slot structures, and further highlight recent progress in implementing these guiding principles in the development of passive functional components, such as multiplexers and combiners. Besides, the integration of all-dielectric waveguide-based devices with active semiconductor devices achieves efficient coupling, thereby enabling high-data-rate transmission. In combination with 3D-printing technology, non-metallic transceiver modules facilitate robust packaging with low-cost and rapid production. These advancements enable compact platforms based on terahertz silicon photonics, paving the way for high-speed operation and large-scale integration in efficient terahertz systems.
