A study on laugher-to-speech and laughter-to-laughter separation using Conv-TasNet
Akihiro Miyake, Yoshiko Arimoto (Chiba Tech) SP2026-4
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study tackled the separation of overlapping laughter from multiple speakers.
Two speakers, one male and one female, who laughed most frequently among speakers in a spontaneous dialog speech corpus, were selected, and their laughter and speech were superimposed to train Conv-TasNet.
Three combinations of overlapping data were prepared: laughter-to-laughter, laughter-to-speech, and speech-to-speech.
Conv-TasNet was trained with each combination of superimposed data, and the separation performance was compared.
Source-to-Distortion Ratio (SDR) and Source-to-Interferences Ratio (SIR) were used for our evaluation metrics.
As a result, the SDR values for speech-to-speech and laughter-to-speech were 15.60 dB and 13.99 dB, respectively, which indicates the separation accuracy didn't significantly degrade when separating laughter from speech.
However, the SDR for laughter-to-laughter was 8.97 dB, which suggests the separation accuracy significantly degraded when separating laughter from laughter.
Although this study showed that the performance of laughter separation from speech was comparable to that of speech separation, separating laughter from laughter remains a challenging task.
Further improvements in speech separation models are required to enable more effective laughter–laughter separation.
