A Proposal of Tone Mapping Method Based on the Fast Local Laplacian Filter and Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation Adjustments

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A high-dynamic-range (HDR) image accommodates a wide range of brightness information of a scene.
An HDR image cannot be directly displayed on standard monitors whose dynamic range is lower than that of the HDR image.
To display an HDR image on low-dynamic-range (LDR)-output devices, the dynamic range adjustment processing called tone mapping is necessary.
In this report, we propose a new fast local Laplacian filter (FLLF)-based tone mapping method for obtaining the image with high visibility in detail and suppressed the loss of details.
FLLF is a fast approximation method of local Laplacian filter (LLF), which is an edge-preserving image processing method using Laplacian pyramid.
The proposed method applies the dynamic range compression using FLLF to the luminance of the input HDR image.
After that, in the proposed method, brightness adjustment for the whole image, gamma transformation, brightness adjustment for the very bright region, dynamic range compression using FLLF, global contrast adjustment, and local contrast enhancement are performed sequentially to obtain the output luminance image.
Then, the target saturation is calculated by generating the color-version of the intermediate output image of the above processing and amplifying the saturation of the generated color image.
Finally, the output color image is generated using the equi-hue plane in the RGB color space.
Through experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified.
