The sixth-generation mobile communication system (6G) is expected to realize ultra-high-speed and high-capacity communications exceeding 100 Gbps, and the utilization of the FR3 (Frequency Range 3) band has attracted significant attention. The FR3 band provides a wider bandwidth than the Sub-6 GHz band while exhibiting lower propagation loss than millimeter-wave and sub-terahertz bands. However, since the available bandwidth in the FR3 band is narrower than that in millimeter-wave and sub-terahertz bands, spatial multiplexing using MIMO is essential for achieving high-capacity communications. In this paper, a fully digital beamspace MIMO system for the FR3 band is investigated. The fully digital MIMO system equipped with a planar antenna array consisting of a large number of antenna elements is employed at the base station, and a MIMO transmission scheme based on beamspace transformation using two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is introduced. Furthermore, transmission characteristics in the 7.5 GHz band are evaluated using the 3GPP channel model. The results confirm that high channel capacity and spatial multiplexing with the maximum number of transmission layers can be achieved in line-of-sight (LOS) environments. In contrast, channel capacity is significantly degraded in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments due to increased propagation loss. In addition, the appropriate number of DFT beams is investigated from the viewpoint of balancing performance improvement and computational complexity. |
