Experimental Evaluation of Coverage in Intersection Environment for 5G NR-based V2I Communication in 5 GHz Band

(in English) One of the challenges in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication using 5 GHz band 5G-NR signals in intersection environments is the difficulty of non-line-of-sight (NLOS) communication caused by strong propagation directivity of signals in the 5 GHz band. One promising solution to this issue is relay communication via road side units (RSUs) installed at intersections. However, outdoor transmission experiments on vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication using 5 GHz band 5G-NR signals in intersection environments have rarely been reported, and the communication coverage achievable with RSUs installed at actual intersections has not been sufficiently investigated. In this paper, we present a fundamental experimental evaluation of the transmission characteristics of 5G-NR signals in 5 GHz band in a real intersection environment assuming V2I communication via RSU. A transmitter emulating RSU was placed near the center of the intersection, and transmission experiments using 5G-NR signal with bandwidth of 100 MHz were conducted for moving vehicles. The results demonstrate that a communication coverage area of approximately 40–60 m from the transmission point can be achieved.
