This paper presents outdoor ultra-high-frequency (UHF)-band $12times12$ multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) vehicular experiments assuming terminal-collaborated MIMO reception. Six two-antenna software-defined radios were installed in a vehicle and operated as an ideal collaborative receiver through wired connections. The experiments were conducted at 427.2,MHz in an outdoor environment where non-line-of-sight and line-of-sight conditions coexist. Three base-station antenna configurations, namely 1-stack, 2-stack, and 6-stack configurations, were evaluated using received power, MIMO channel capacity, and estimated channel rank. The results show that the MIMO channel capacity increases with received power in all configurations, while capacity variations remain even within the same received-power range. The channel capacity also continued to increase without saturation when the number of receive antennas was increased up to 12. Furthermore, many full-rank regions with a channel rank of 12 were observed in the 1-stack and 2-stack configurations, whereas the 6-stack configuration tended to show lower estimated channel ranks due to the effect of building blockage. These results experimentally clarify the effect of base-station antenna configuration on outdoor UHF-band $12times12$ MIMO channel characteristics. |
