A Study on Adaptive Polar Code Design and Symbol Distribution Approximation for Low-Complexity MIMO-OFDM Receivers

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In this paper, we focus on the design of a low-complexity receiver
for coded multiple-input multiple-output~(MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing~(OFDM) systems
targeting Internet of Things (IoT) device communications.
For MIMO detection, we employ the symbol distribution approximation~(SDA),
which successfully reduces the receiver complexity while achieving
near-optimal performance.
For channel coding and decoding,
we adopt polar codes with successive cancellation~(SC) decoding,
where the code is designed according to the characteristics of
each MIMO-OFDM channel realization.
The use of SDA allows outperforming
the conventional linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE)
detector with even lower detection complexity, whereas
the proposed polar coding approach can achieve performance comparable to
low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with lower decoding latency.
Considering the constraints of IoT devices,
simulations are performed over a MIMO-OFDM channel with a small number of antennas,
which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
