This paper presents a theoretical feasibility study of MIMO imaging using a bistatic short-range radar mounted on platforms such as drones. When the radar target is assumed to be the ground surface or subsurface region, a monostatic radar is predicted to suffer degradation in the received signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio under geometries with acute relative angles between the radar and target. In contrast, a bistatic configuration is advantageous for receiving signals near the specular reflection direction. Each transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx) unit consists of a multi-element antenna array, and image processing focused on short-range regions is performed by utilizing the signals obtained at each receiving channel for every transmitting channel. In this study, the soil is modeled using a theory that incorporates reflection coefficients of multilayer planar structures, and the case in which a thin metallic target exists within the medium is also investigated. |
