In extremely-large multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems operating at millimeter-wave frequencies, the enlarged antenna aperture extends the Rayleigh distance, making near-field effects significant in channel estimation. Since near-field channels depend on both angle and distance, DFT-based angular-domain representations suffer from energy leakage and lose sparsity. In this paper, we propose a polar-domain transform matrix design based on the maximum range interval that
preserves the unimodality of the transformed angular response. The proposed design sequentially determines range samples while keeping the transform matrix compact. We further develop a low-complexity estimator that partitions the transform matrix into range blocks and applies compressed sensing only to the dominant block. Simulation results show a favorable trade-off between estimation accuracy and computational complexity, achieving near polar-domain performance with a search dimension comparable to that of the DFT basis. |
