[Invited Lecture] Research and development of advanced wireless technologies for 6G

(in English) This paper comprehensively introduces the research and development activities at KDDI Research toward the realization of 6G in the 2030s. To meet the requirements of 6G, which calls for both ultra-high capacity communications and wide-area coverage, we are advancing technological innovations in several key areas. First, as an enhancement of access technologies, we are promoting research that combines distributed MIMO (D-MIMO) with AI technologies. This research aims to provide a consistently high-quality user experience in crowded areas, at cell boundaries, and in shadowed regions where radio waves are difficult to reach, by optimally controlling multiple base station antennas using AI. Second, in the utilization and exploration of high and new frequency bands, we discuss AI-based multi-beam selection optimization for next-generation millimeter-wave V2X communications, as well as research toward the utilization of the FR3 band, a key candidate frequency for 6G, with approaches that balance communication quality and power efficiency. Furthermore, as an innovative technology for actively controlling the radio propagation environment, we introduce the development of a low-power liquid-crystal metasurface reflector whose reflection direction can be arbitrarily steered, as well as case studies of millimeter-wave area construction using such reflectors. Through these multifaceted research activities, we discuss future prospects for wireless communication technologies in the Beyond 5G/6G era.
