Mission-critical services require stable mobile communication because communication delays and transient disconnections directly affect service quality. In this paper, we focus on remote monitoring for autonomous driving as a representative mission-critical service and propose a lightweight packet scheduler for Multipath QUIC (MPQUIC). A conventional Time-in-Flight-based scheduler is easy to implement because it relies on measured delay information and the sojourn time of unacknowledged packets; however, it reacts after delay degradation appears in the observed metrics and may not sufficiently suppress delay degradation at an early stage. The proposed scheduler jointly evaluates the approximate queueing delay of each path and future delay degradation risk. It then selects the path with the minimum score for packet transmission. We evaluated the proposed scheduler through on-road field trials in Musashino City, Tokyo. In the experiment, uplink UDP traffic was generated by iperf2 at 10.0 Mbps over MPQUIC using three cellular links. One-way delay (OWD) and packet loss rate (PLR) were used as evaluation metrics. The results show that the proposed scheduler improves mean delay, 95th-percentile delay, and PLR compared with the TiF-based scheduler. |
