Implementation and evaluation of Fronthaul Extension via O-RAN-Compliant DU Driver Modification in 5G Networks

(in English) In O-RAN Split 7.2x configurations, extending the fronthaul~(FH) distance is a critical challenge for reducing C-RAN deployment costs and expanding coverage. FH extension requires adjusting DU-RU transmission and reception timing according to FH delay; however, existing implementations suffer from timing calculation failures across slot boundaries and insufficient scheduler preparation time. In this paper, assuming a low-jitter transmission environment such as IOWN APN technology, we propose a method to significantly extend the FH distance without any hardware modifications to the RU or FH, by combining timing window adjustment, DL/UL slot-number correction, and scheduler look-ahead adjustment. Through experiments using OpenAirInterface~(OAI) on real hardware, we demonstrate that communication can be maintained without significant throughput degradation even under FH delays significantly exceeding the commonly assumed fronthaul design guideline of 150,textmu s (equivalent to 30,km) for lower-layer split deployments.
