This paper proposes a method for generating Bessel beams using a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). Besselbeams have attracted attention as promising approach to overcome communication instability in high-frequency bands becauseof their self-healing property, which enables the main lobe to maintain its intensity even behind obstacles. To realize robustcommunication in practical environments, it is necessary to dynamically control both the beam directions and cone anglesaccording to user locations and propagation conditions. To address this issue, we derive a closed-form expression for the phaseshift at each RIS element required to generate Bessel beams in three-dimensional space and implement the derived closed-formphase control via a 28GHz RIS with line-of-sight environments. Through numerical results from electromagnetic simulationsand real-world experiments, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that the proposed phase distribution allows forthe formation of Bessel beams in the desired directions while maintaining their self-healing propagation characteristics. |
