LAPUTA: Sensor Network Localization Using Robust and Accurate Restoration of Euclidean Distance Matrices

(in English) This paper presents a sensor network localization (SNL) method based on simultaneous completion and denoising of Euclidean distance matrices (EDMs). SNL is one of the most important tasks in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) which estimates sensor coordinates from available measurements. Many works assume no missing values in measurements; however, this assumption is impractical for real-world WSNs. In this paper, we formulate SNL with missing entries as an EDM completion problem called LAPUTA: SNL via patchwise EDM completion and denoising using truncated nuclear norm regularization (TNNR). Our method consists of four steps: 1) A communication graph is divided into subgraphs and pairwise distances between nodes are estimated from measurements within each subgraph. Collecting these distances yields a local EDM for each subgraph. 2) In each subgraph, we complete and denoise the local EDMs by utilizing a rank constraint which derived from the nature of EDM, which finally formulated as a difference-of-convex optimization problem using TNNR. 3) We estimate the rotation and translation for each subgraph to perform in the global coordinate system, again utilizing TNNR. 4) We apply a global refinement over all estimated sensor coordinates. The main contributions of this paper lie in steps 2) and 3): Both utilize TNNR, and we explicitly account for missing entries in EDM completion. In experiments on synthetic and real-world data, our method exhibits better estimation performance in RMSE than existing methods.
