Effects of thermal stimulation on subjective, cognitive, and behavioral responses under time pressure and uncertainty

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In emergency situations where life-threatening danger is imminent―such as disasters caused by earthquakes, typhoons, and fires―affected individuals experience a strong sense of urgency. Under such conditions, attention becomes narrowly focused on limited targets, leading to failures in perceiving critical information. In addition, unexpected events may impair the ability to select appropriate actions, resulting in reduced decision-making capacity and delays in behavior due to cognitive biases. Quantitatively evaluating these strong effects on emotion, cognition, and behavior, and developing mitigation strategies, is crucial for preventing inappropriate behavioral responses and ultimately protecting human life. In this study, we focus on urgency and aim to capture its effects from emotional, behavioral, and physiological perspectives. Furthermore, as a potential method for mitigating urgency, we quantitatively evaluate the effects of localized heating and cooling, which have been suggested to influence cognitive task performance during task execution. The results suggested that the effect of thermal stimulation varied depending on the conditions that induce urgency, indicating that applying thermal stimulation according to the situation is useful.
