Estimation of Full-Body Physical Activity Intensity from Camera Images Using Variational Autoencoder Regression

(in English) This study proposes a camera-based method for estimating METs (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) based on posture estimation, without the use of wearable devices. For model training, camera images and exhaled gas analysis are simultaneously performed. Kinematic and kinetic features are extracted from the 3D coordinate sequence obtained from posture estimation to construct a METs regression estimation model. For estimation, only camera images are used as input. After the same preprocessing and feature extraction as model training, METs are estimated using the trained model. In evaluation experiments, the estimation accuracy was good under the same motion conditions as the training model. However, when applied to unknown motion types or tempo conditions, the estimation error increased significantly, confirming that there are issues with generalization performance.
