Hippocampal place cells form cognitive maps that underlie spatial cognition and memory. Although the stability of these maps is thought to be essential for reliable spatial behavior, recent longitudinal recordings have revealed a paradoxical coexistence of continuously changing place fields with stable population-level representations and behavior. However, whether representational drift serves a functional role in memory systems remains unclear. Here, we develop a Bayesian learning model based on stochastic neuronal and synaptic dynamics and show that hippocampal place fields can self-organize from entorhinal grid cell inputs. The resulting representations exhibit continual reorganization of individual place fields while preserving stable population-level position coding, reproducing experimentally observed representational drift. Importantly, we find that representational drift is required for the expansion of cognitive maps into newly accessible space, whereas suppressing representational drift substantially impairs the reorganization of cognitive maps in expanded environments. Suggesting that representational drift is a functional computational principle that enables cognitive map expansion while preserving stable spatial representations, our results provide a framework for understanding how memory systems reconcile stability with flexibility in changing environments. |
