Evaluation and Analysis of RGB and Thermal Image alignment using Depth Anything v2

(in English) We propose a registration method for RGB and thermal images that leverages monocular depth estimation via Depth Anything v2 together with 3D reconstruction. By estimating depth from both the RGB and thermal modalities and establishing geometric correspondences using calibration information, the proposed method achieves alignment that is robust to modality differences. In an evaluation on the MS2 dataset (500 frames each for daytime and nighttime), the method outperformed the conventional approach (ECC) in terms of mutual information and gradient normalized cross-correlation, whereas ECC remained superior in structural similarity (G-SSIM), suggesting that performance differs depending on the evaluation metric. These results demonstrate that geometric correspondence mediated by depth information is effective for cross-modal image registration.
