(in English) Mode division multiplexing (MDM) technology is attracting significant attention to expand transmission capacity. In MDM transmission, reducing mode-dependent loss (MDL) is a critical challenge, and a system configuration incorporating a silica-based planar lightwave circuit (PLC) type mode exchanger into the transmission path is a promising solution. In this paper, we propose a novel PLC-based six-mode exchanger that combines a mode add/drop filter using a bridge coupler with directional couplers of different waveguide heights, and a cascaded Y-branch structure. We investigate the insertion loss and MDL characteristics of the device in the C-band using beam propagation method (BPM) analysis, and evaluate its performance in comparison with a conventional six-mode exchanger.
