An Empirical Study of Ethical HUMINT through Human-in-the-Loop LLM Dialogue Support

(in English) Human intelligence (HUMINT) using social networking services (SNS) such as Telegram is highly effective for acquiring deep threat intelligence that is unobtainable through open-source intelligence (OSINT). However, it requires specialized knowledge and experience to execute properly due to barriers such as language differences, community-specific jargon, and strict adherence to research ethics. In this study, we propose a method that utilizes Large Language Models (LLMs) as a dialogue assistance tool to conduct HUMINT while alleviating the investigator's burden and ensuring ethical compliance. In the proposed method, prior to interacting with actual attackers, an LLM analyzes the attackers' posts and generates context-aware utterance candidates in the form of a dialogue tree. Furthermore, role-playing sessions are conducted with a simulated attacker LLM based on dialogue rules that incorporate this dialogue tree, ensuring thorough preparation before the actual experiment. As a demonstration experiment, we attempted to identify the payment methods of 10 attackers advertising spam tools on Telegram. As a result, successful dialogues were established with all 10 attackers, and cryptocurrency transfer addresses were obtained from 7 of them. Additionally, we gained insights into the reality of their transaction operations, including product and pricing structures, legitimate services abused as stepping stones, direct cryptocurrency transfers, payment confirmation methods, and initial setup agency services. No ethically problematic statements were observed throughout these interactions.
