Power line communication (PLC) utilizes existing power lines as communication channels, making it effective for network construction in environments such as factories where deploying dedicated communication cables is difficult. In this paper, focusing on VCTF cables intended for PLC applications, we measured the temperature and humidity characteristics using the open-short method with a vector network analyzer, and quantitatively analyzed their variation trends and magnitudes.
The measurement results revealed that the primary components of the transmission characteristics respond promptly to temperature variations, followed by only minor subsequent shifts. At a frequency of $30,mathrm{MHz}$, the attenuation constant increased by a factor of approximately 2.40 due to a temperature rise from 27$^circmathrm{C}$ to 70$^circmathrm{C}$, demonstrating that temperature is the dominant factor in these variations. On the other hand, although the change in the attenuation constant due to humidity proceeds through a rapid response and subsequent gradual moisture absorption, and its overall magnitude is relatively small, it was found that even such a slight increase can accumulate and exert a non-negligible impact when considering practical environments where PLC systems are operated over long-distance power lines. |
