Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Magnetic pulse welding method can create a high-quality electrical connection between Al and Cu sheets at low temperatures. The experiments are carried out passing a large discharge current from a capacitor bank to a thin flat 5-turn coil. Using the thin coil, the capacitor bank energy and discharge current required for welding can be reduced. The coil is elastic and consists of five coil plates with high strength and medium conductivity. The coil thickness is 2mm including insulating sheets. The Al/Cu sheets are overlapped with a gap (1mm) between them and fixed onto the insulated coil. The Al sheet near the coil is electromagnetically coupled to the coil. When the discharge current flows through the coil, a high-density magnetic flux is suddenly applied to the Al sheet. As a result, eddy currents flow in the Al sheet, and electromagnetic forces are generated. The Al sheet is accelerated and collided with the Cu sheet at high speed, and the two sheets are impact welded together. The capacity of the capacitor bank is 24μF, the oscillation period of the discharge current is 30μs. For example, the bank energy required for welding of Al/Cu sheets (each thickness 0.5mm) is 0.38kJ, the discharge voltage is 5.6kV, and the maximum discharge current is approximately 19kA.
