Communication networks utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have attracted considerable attention for further enhancing communication capacity and coverage in Beyond 5G. In particular, UAV-based aerial base stations (ABSs) can be rapidly and flexibly deployed in 3D space and are expected to provide adaptive communication environments in response to temporal variations in user traffic demand and radio propagation conditions. For the practical deployment of ABSs, their placement and trajectory design are crucial for improving communication quality and coverage for ground users. However, these
problems are challenging due to the high degrees of freedom in 3D space, complicated air-to-ground channel characteristics, and inter-cell interference among multiple ABSs. Although many placement control and trajectory design methods for ABSs have been proposed, most of them rely on centralized control. Therefore, the computational complexity and information collection costs increase as the deployment area and the number of users increase. In this talk, we present distributed placement control
and trajectory design methods for the efficient deployment of ABS networks toward the realization of adaptive communication environments. Specifically, we introduce a coverage-control-based approach for maximizing coverage and the sum data rate, a potential-game-based approach for distributed UAV placement control, and a distributed-model-predictive-control-based approach for UAV trajectory control. Finally, future challenges and perspectives toward the practical deployment of UAV networks are
discussed. |
