Learning Effects of Animation-Based Visualization of Program Behavior for Programming Learning

(in English) For novice programmers, it is important to understand the behavior and reference structures of programs from source code. In this study, we developed "ProPict6," a system that visualizes the behavior of Java programs through animations using pictograms, and introduced it into university programming courses. ProPict6 displays a program in separate panes for code, reference structure, and animation, and visualizes its behavior in a step-by-step manner. This paper reports on evaluation experiments conducted for each individual syntax, covering topics such as the evaluation process of arithmetic expressions and logical operations, and the reference structures of instances. The results showed that the step-by-step animations of ProPict6 were effective in correcting misconceptions about the order of expression evaluation and line transitions. While the effect was limited for classes and instances, a potential effect on understanding reference structures was suggested.
