This report discusses electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues of aircraft radio altimeter (RA) due to Sub-6 band 5G mobile communications systems in Japan. The aircraft RAs are operated between 4.2−4.4 GHz. However, Sub-6 5G mobiles systems are introduced for the adjacent band those of the RA band. In Japan, the RA frequency band and the guard band for 5G mobile systems are 100 MHz, which is narrower than in other countries. We confirmed that the risk of interference is higher than other countries, under the narrow guard band conditions in Japan. In this paper, differences in base-station signal characteristics of sub-6 GHz band 5G mobile communication systems around and above Sendai International Airport and Sendai City between December 2024 and January 2026 are examined. The results confirm that airborne signal strength, including during approach and takeoff phases, increased by approximately 10 dB compared with measurements conducted one year earlier. In addition, the aerial coverage area expanded, including over the ocean. Consequently, the magnitude by which base-station signal strength exceeds the interference tolerance mask values increased. Furthermore, the number of observation points with detectable base-station signals in the 100-MHz guard band—where interference conditions are more critical—also increased. |
