An Analysis of Funding and Its Impact on Development Activities in Open Source Projects

(in English) Financial support has become important for sustaining Open Source Software (OSS), but how funds are spent and how they relate to development activity remain unclear. This study analyzes OSS projects in Open Collective by combining transaction histories with GitHub commit histories. We found that funding consists of many small contributions and fewer, larger expenses, and that development-related spending is the largest identifiable expense category. Individual payments are mainly directed toward existing contributors, and projects with substantial development-related spending show more favorable commit growth. These findings suggest that OSS funding should be analyzed by focusing not only on funding amounts, but also on spending purposes and recipients.
