This report discusses the polarization dependence of radio wave attenuation caused by trees. The authors have previously defined the attenuation per unit of leaves amount and branches amount as the leaf attenuation coefficient and the branches attenuation coefficient, respectively. Although polarization dependence was not considered in these previous studies, considering the shapes of leaves and branches, it is likely that tree attenuation exhibits polarization dependence. In this report, we determine the polarization dependence of tree attenuation through measurements and FDTD (Finite-Difference Time-Domain) calculations. We demonstrate that, while the attenuation characteristics for horizontal and vertical polarization differ depending on the shape of leaves and branches, the polarization dependence is not significant for the total attenuation of a tree comprising both leaves and branches; therefore, it is considered that polarization dependence need not be considered for practical purposes. |
