Accurate knowledge of piezoelectric material parameters is essential for the model-based design of ultrasonic transducers. The analytical methods defined in international standards are based on specific sample geometries, which differ from the ring-shaped piezoelectric ceramics typically used in transducers. To obtain material parameters that truly represent the ceramics used and to reduce experimental effort, new determination methods are being developed within a current research project [1]. It is known that the mechanical prestress applied in bolted Langevin transducers alters material parameters and thus influences the resonance frequency. However, little information is available on how the complete parameter set required for finite element design changes with mechanical prestress and elapsed time so far. To investigate the time-dependent influence of mechanical prestress on material characteristics, a dedicated setup has been built to apply a defined homogeneous uniaxial stress on ring-shaped PZT and lead-free ceramics. While continuously driving the ceramics on a low power level, electromechanical properties have been monitored over 50 hours. Long-term admittance measurement results are presented as well as results of an iterative model based parameter identification process. Resonance and antiresonance frequency increase with the prestress applied. As well, they both increase over time following a decadic trend. The frequency distance of resonance and antiresonance frequency decreases, indicating reduced electromechanical coupling. These findings highlight the need to consider time- and stress-dependent effects when tuning ultrasonic system components for optimum performance. |
