Automotive coatings must increasingly reduce VOC emissions, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions, promoting waterborne, high-solids, and low-bake technologies. This study investigated a wet-on-wet two-layer system comprising Lower layer (LL) and Upper layer (UL). Drying-stage viscoelastic behavior was evaluated non-destructively by electric field tweezers while varying the needle-to-surface distance. LL and UL showed distinct relaxation behavior, whereas their single-layer relaxation parameters were independent of measurement distance. In the multilayer film, surface-sensitive measurements reproduced UL-like behavior, while deeper measurements revealed markedly slower relaxation than either single layer, suggesting interlayer migration, compositional changes, and mechanical coupling near the interface. |
