An Investigation of Prefix-Length Cache Optimization for Routing Lookup

(in English) In routing table lookup, reducing lookup latency and memory accesses is important because a longest prefix match is performed for the destination IP address of each packet.

Among lookup cache techniques that store and reuse lookup results in SRAM, a prefix-length cache uses the upper n bits of a destination IP address as a tag, and the choice of the reference bit length n affects the number of required entries.

In this study, we use packet traces from the MAWI traffic archive and routing tables to calculate the number of unique entries for each day’s real traffic, and define the daily optimal n as the reference bit length that minimizes this value.

The results show that the daily optimal n remains relatively stable within a certain period,
while the number of unique entries differs depending on the fixed value of n.

These results suggest that frequent daily changes of the reference bit length are of limited necessity, and that selecting an appropriate fixed value of n according to the target traffic is important.
