Driven by demands for high capacity and low power consumption, data center networks (DCNs) are shifting from electrical packet switches to optical circuit switches (OCSs). Operating OCS-based DCNs in practice requires guaranteeing two distinct notions of "correctness." The first is logical correctness—namely, the nonblocking property, which ensures that any connection request can be accommodated without disrupting existing connections. The second is physical correctness—the integrity of the fibers, that is, the assurance that the tens of thousands of optical fibers are wired exactly as designed. This talk introduces a line of research that unifies these two aspects under the perspective of reliability assurance. For the former, we discuss the nonblocking condition for Clos fabrics that have become non-uniform due to the mixture of switch generations, together with a fast algorithm for deciding it. For the latter, we address a method that automatically verifies both the fiber topology and the fiber quality without re-attaching a tester to each individual fiber. A common feature of both lines of work is that they are grounded in combinatorial mathematics, achieving both theoretical guarantees and practical applicability to large-scale DCNs. |
